Q&A with Mission-Haiti: Using BackpackEMR in a Small Clinic

BackpackEMR was initially created for mobile clinics, but because of its focus on patient care and simplified screens, it can also be ideal for permanent clinics running outside of the U.S. One example is Mission-Haiti.

Mission-Haiti has an extensive history of serving the people of Haiti with school, orphanage, home for the elderly, evangelism, and medical care. In 2019, they opened their first permanent clinic, Lanmou San Fin (LSF) Health Center in Ti Rivye to provide affordable and quality care with a focus on follow-up visits and patient education.

Now LSF sees between 250 to 300 patients per week at their primary care clinic. In addition to general consultations, they provide wound care, laboratory services (excluding chemistries), some ultrasound services, in-house pharmacy dispensary, ECG, rapid testing for illnesses such as malaria and STIs, prenatal care, and chronic disease management and social service programs.

We are so grateful to have LSF as a partner using BackpackEMR in their clinic! We had a Q&A with Bethany Perissien, LSF’s Medical Administrator, who was willing to share about her experience using BackpackEMR:

What was your clinic like before BackpackEMR?

  • We jumped in right away with BackpackEMR. Not starting with electronic medical records wasn’t even an option for us.  It was a nonnegotiable. And we are so grateful for it.

How has BackEMR helped your clinic? Do you have a short story you’d like to share?

  • BackpackEMR definitely sets us apart from other healthcare facilities in our area. The fact that our staff can communicate in real time, and have all the patient’s medical history at LSF in one place is just such a blessing. The patients take notice. They know that we are able to immediately refer to their old visits and put “their story” together quickly and completely.

What has been the biggest “game changer” with digital charts and/or BackpackEMR?

  • One of our biggest selling points to integrate BackpackEMR into our patient care was that the system is not dependent on the internet. We went nearly 2 months where our internet was down completely and did not even skip a beat!
  • BackpackEMR is very user-friendly. EMR systems are confusing and complex in general. But you add that to a population of people who did not grow up with technology access the way we did, it could make record-keeping very difficult. But BackpackEMR makes it do-able for just about everyone.
