Inspired at GMHC 2021

Inspired at GMHC 2021

The Global Missions Health Conference in Louisville is quite an energizing experience!

If you haven’t been there before, it’s a conference dedicated to people who are looking to bring medical care to underserved populations in rural areas all over the world. It was my first time attending in person last week, and it was inspiring to be around so many people doing such great work!

Even though it was MY first GMHC, it marked 6 years of attendance for BackpackEMR. As in years past, we had a booth to show demos of our software. People loved seeing how the EMR software connects the iPads WITHOUT the internet, and WITHOUT electricity. The solar panel, battery backup, and rugged router were all on display, running 3 iPads in different languages! It was fun to show people in person how quickly (and securely!) the patient information moves from one iPad, to another, enabling a large volume of patients to stay organized.

We also gave away some useful “swag.”

CPR masks on keychains!

Beyond our booth, the breakout meetings and plenary sessions were also a fantastic source of inspiration and information. Friday morning’s plenary session discussed the importance of reliable, trusted data to help combat medical misinformation. One of the reasons our partners choose BackpackEMR is for the data in our auto-generated reports, which allow organizations to quickly see exactly how many patients they’ve helped at their clinics, most common illnesses, and types of treatment plans that were successful—and report that to the ministries of health, and to their donors to show their impact.

If you missed me at the show—no problem. Feel free to click here to book a no-pressure meeting with me. I’d love to meet you!

Be sure to ask me how you can get the Keen backpack below for free! (Hint: sign up for BackpackEMR before January 31, 2022, and use the code: GMHC2021)

Next-Gen Mobile Solutions for Modern Healthcare

Next-Gen Mobile Solutions for Modern Healthcare

I had the amazing opportunity to join Dr. Bertalan Meshko, Director of The Medical Futurist, in a Fireside Chat in this CXO Sync Event, sponsored by our tech-partner, Couchbase

We discussed how COVID-19 has changed digital health worldwide, including in low-middle income countries, and how behaviors and mindsets have changed to support it. It was interesting to talk about different innovations across the world that have accelerated their rollouts with the increased acceptance of digital health solutions.

Event Description:

What if personalized medical care had no boundaries? Consumer and patient needs are constantly changing, and because of that, we need to also change.

Digital transformation in healthcare is a must for those looking to better the consumer/patient experience. Within this webinar, we will hear from two experts to discuss the future of Healthcare applications and digital transformation in the healthcare industry.

Join us to explore:

  • How innovative mobile solutions are shaping the future of healthcare with high-performance, scalable applications that work anywhere
  • How we can utilize technology to see more patients, reduce cost, and cut manual processes
  • How we can continue to work even if offline

Virtual Care Partnerships with Blessings and ACFS

Virtual Care Partnerships with Blessings and ACFS

GHIC 2021 – We had the opportunity to present a session at the Global Health Innovation Conference 2021, sponsored by Unite for Sight and Northwestern University, on April 8-11. Our session “Join Us! Virtual Support for Unlimited High-Quality Care” highlighted 2 of our partners, Blessings International and the African Christian Fellowship (ACF), and focused on our joint work to provide virtual care to rural communities.

Blessings International

In our pre-recorded video, Barry Ewy, CEO of Blessings International, talked about exporting high-quality, verified medications to medical teams providing healthcare in low-middle income countries (LMICs) during COVID-19. Counterfeit and substandard drugs are a growing problem in several LMICs, and Blessings is able to ensure quality medications by exporting directly to the medical professionals overseas.

Blessings International measures their impact by a factor called their “Human Treatment Value”. It consists of 2 numbers aggregated together to estimate the # of lives touched. The first value is the the Daily Treatment Value, which is the # of days a medication helps a patient – for example, any daily medication indicates a day of treatment per pill. The second value is a Curative Treatment, which is a medication meant to cure, such as Malaria medications or antibiotics. Over the past fiscal year, Blessings had a Human Treatment Value of 95 Million, which translates to an estimated 4 Million lives touched!

African Christian Fellowship

Dr. Joyce Olutade with the ACF-South Region and Victor Nwoji with the ACF-South Region’s Samuel Town Clinic in Sierra Leone also joined the discussion to talk about working with Blessings and BackpackEMR to bring virtual care to rural communities in Sierra Leone, despite ACF doctors’ inability to join the mobile clinics in-person. They highlighted the ability for doctors in the US and in Nigeria to view patient details from their homes using BackpackEMR’s web portal, and to give feedback to local health workers on diagnosis and treatment in real-time. The remote doctors were also able to see the list of medications that Blessings exported and that were available to prescribe to patients from within BackpackEMR, as well.

We are very thankful to both of our partners for contributing to this video and for partnering with us on virtual care. We can’t wait to collaborate again!

Webinar Recording: Tools to Approach Organization Changes in 2020

Webinar Recording: Tools to Approach Organization Changes in 2020

2020 has impacted non-profit organizations in ways we couldn’t have predicted. Travel restrictions, economic uncertainty and civil unrest have left leadership navigating significant changes. Therefore, leaders have to adjust their staffing and hiring practices, sustainability of operations, and in some cases the core mission of their organizations. Looking ahead, what if COVID gets worse? Or, what if COVID is eliminated, and global travel opened up again in 2021? Would you be prepared to seize these opportunities?

To come along side of non-profit leaders in addressing those questions, we invited Victor Thompson of Emergent Leadership Pathways to conduct a mini-strategic assessment.

In this workshop, Victor shared how to:

  1. Identify key areas for attention and improvement
  2. Determine an action to take immediately to “clear space” for more strategic thinking
  3. Self-assess on a regular basis

During the assessment, Victor asked each participant to rank seven key dimensions of their organizations that determine the health of their work. At the end, he walked us through the process of prioritizing and evaluating areas that are strengths. According to Victor, “it is more important to understand individual strengths than it is to keep trying to work on improving their deficiencies.”

Our Founder, Lori Most, has worked with Victor on Executive Coaching , and has applied these principles into the work of BackpackEMR. At BackpackEMR, one of our strengths is innovative problem solving. After evaluating how 2020 has impacted the global health community, we have adjusted our business strategy and created a new tool for Virtual Care. We designed Virtual Care to help organizations who are committed to serve remote patients under the current travel restrictions. Lori announced the launching of BackpackEMR’s Virtual Care tool in the beginning of the webinar. Click on the link below to watch the full workshop!

TCSW Founders Panel on Lessons Learned

TCSW Founders Panel on Lessons Learned

It’s Twin Cities Startup Week! Well, “month”, this time around. With gathering restrictions, TCSW20 is 100% virtual with sessions scattered across September, and that included our panel Lessons Learned While Growing Your Social Enterprise hosted by Ecotone Analytics

We were joined by 2 other stand-out social entrepreneurs, Isaiah Goodman and Emily Hunt Turner, to talk about lessons learned as founders of social enterprises. Specifically, we highlighted times when we’ve had “bruised shins” and had to work our way back.

 A few key take-aways:

1. Make sure your story is refined early. It will always make perfect sense to you – you are the founder! Make it hit home with others by getting professional story-telling help ASAP. One resource I’d suggest is Julie Kucinski at Pitchwell. She can take your complicated business plan and boil it down to a 5 second catch phrase that grabs attention and leaves people wanting to hear more.

2. Remember to build in a feedback loop. This applies to customers, beneficiaries, stakeholders, or anyone else that is touched by your project. At the same time, remember to filter the feedback, as well. In some cases, you have decide which feedback to listen to, and when to listen to your gut. It isn’t easy – but getting the feedback is the first step, then confirming who has the best insight is next.

 3. Get comfortable with debt. In our personal lives, we strive to stay out of debt. With a social venture, you are assured to take on debt in the early stages, just to stay afloat. Very few investors will invest early, so you’ll need to look to friends and family, banks, and other debt vehicles to keep both you and your company going. This is normal. Don’t feel like you’ve failed! Just keep moving, and once you get your break and start generating revenue, the investors will come.

We had a light-hearted discussion on how to handle struggles with humility while also harnessing the passion we all feel about our social enterprises to overcome the obstacles. It’s important to know you’re not alone, and we’ve all hit some lows in our journey. But use your passion to drive through it, and use your network of social entrepreneurs!

If any social startups are struggling with an obstacle right now, feel free to connect with me, and I’m happy to talk through any lessons I’ve learned that might be helpful!

Webinar: Think Like a Donor: Use Data to Communicate Impact

Webinar: Think Like a Donor: Use Data to Communicate Impact

Impact Measurement is becoming mainstream for non-profits and social enterprises to communicate their impact to donors, investors, and stakeholders

In this webinar, Tim Roman of Ecotone Analytics joins Lori Most from Binary Bridge to discuss how Impact Measurement can lead to:

  1. An increase in funding through donor confidence in your outcomes
  2. Aligning your organization around the same goals with formal KPIs (key performance indicators)
  3. Redirecting your work to better execute your mission after examining ultimate goals
  4. New strategic initiatives discovered through measuring true impact

They start by defining exactly what Impact Measurement is and described how to create a system within your organization to quantify the impact that your organization has on communities. They discuss details of building a Logic Model with your leadership team, and the power of a deeper analysis of your impact and how you measure ultimate outcomes.

A deep understanding of your impact will lead to significant increases in fundraising, program improvement, and ultimately better outcomes for the people that you serve. Click on the link below to hear more!
